How to read the label for shellfish allergy sufferers

Avoid foods that contain shellfish or any of the following;

Crab

Crawfish - crayfish, ecrevisse

Lobster - langouste, langoustine, scampo, coral, tomally

Prawn

Shrimp - crevette

Your doctor may advise you to avoid;

Abalone

Clams - cherrystone, littleneck, pismo, quahog

Cockle - periwinkle, sea urchin

Mussels

Octopus

Oysters

Scallops

Snails - escargots

Squid - calamari

Shellfish are sometimes found in the following;

Anchovy sauce

Aspic

Bouillabaisse

Caviar

Cuttlefish ink

Fish stock

Seafood flavouring

Surimi

Bear in mind;

Any food served in a seafood restaurant or in a deli may contain shellfish protein due to cross-contact.

For some people a reaction may occur from inhaling cooking vapours or from handling fish or shellfish
